David Caves has played Forensic Scientist Jack Hodgson, in BBC One’s Silent Witness since 2013.
For new viewers coming to Silent Witness for the first time this year, where do we meet Jack and what can we expect from this series?
Jack has more carte blanche than perhaps the others do, as he is not attached to anyone. This gives him more freedom of movement, more potential for new relationships and a bit more mystery, which I think very important. We started a relationship with dad last year which develops more in this series. At heart, he’s still the lone-wolf he always was, but with very strong ties to Clarissa especially.
This is an important series for Jack – could you explain why?
They are all important series as we see the character go through different phases in their lives. In this series, he certainly has quite a big storyline which takes him to deep places emotionally.
What is your most memorable moment from this series?
My favourite moments are almost always the times the regular cast share together. We have a good laugh despite the dark nature of the show. Also, working with some the guests is always a blast. They all seem to enjoy their time with us.
What do you think is the secret to the show’s continuing success?
Good stories. Always. This show has an uncanny ability to tap into zeitgeists. Writers will pre-empt major news headlines in an almost clairvoyant way. Hopefully, good performances bring back an extremely loyal audience.
Finally – do you have any New Year’s resolutions for 2019?
Keep breathing in and out.
